Guitar, Gym, study, Family, Life

I have had about 6 guitar lessons

- The first lesson was awesome - I learnt so much about 6 chords, then I tried to learn how to strum, with my right hand and it all went wrong - this is really difficult for me, I can't keep rhythm. I can't hit the strings with up and down strokes and not strike the strings with up and down strokes in a consistent time and constantly keep my right hand in rhythm and I am far from being able to do this and seamlessly change chords...

But I am not ready to give up - just yet!

I joined the gym on Saturday, it is a local gym - not a chain.. it is small and cheap, but the equipment is good. I am not really an exercise person... but recently I am inspired as I have been losing weight by not drinking alcohol during the week (still have a few beers at the weekend though) and walking everyday...  In the UK I weighed 83kg (ashamed to say) and in fashion and body conscious Korea - this is a bad weight to be. but things are moving, in the right direction... so I am putting this out there with my target. But my main aim is just losing the beer gut! but I enjoy beer, and Korean Chicken - too much)  I think that Korean food has really helped - It is quite healthy, but I love it.. a bit too much. As is common in Korea, gyms provide clothes to wear in the gym, for a small additional fee... last night the owner asked me "Extra Large" - the t shirt he gave me may have been extra large but was skinny fit - like a muscle vest... this is so far away from what my body shape is...  so this is my new target, to fit in the XL - T-shirt without looking so hideous! - I worry that someone may complain!

You can follow my Korean study progress on my other blog but I am currently having 3 lessons a week and trying to squeeze in as much self study as I came - listening is still improving, but speak is still a struggle...  but little by little I am making progress...

Lots of things going on in my family life too,

Harvey has started football and the other week he had a 3 game tournament - they lost - (0-0,0-0,0-1) but i was impressed by Harvey's skill and determination and it was a good day.

Last Saturday I attended Erin's kindergarten open day. Each child had to perform on stage and Erin had been practising all week!  When the performances started, I was surprised as the Parents joined their child on stage in matching t-shirts and all sang together... Act 2 - matching T-shirts... so when our turn came around we joined Erin on stage and I managed to break out some of the dance moves and about 5 words to the song... Harvey carried us with his loud singing and I think Erin was a bit stage frightened - but we had fun!

Here are the teachers giving their performance

Update:

It has been a long time since I wrote a blog post here and I have even stopped blogging the amazing things series.  So much has been going on in my life but nothing of any real interest to write about, family and friends get more than enough updates through facebook, kakao talk and instagram so this blog has become a bit unnecessary.  But, I don't want to retire it.  It was a good record of our move here, but I need to give it more purpose.

I have been concentrating on my other Blog. Korean Learning . Which unsurprisingly is about learning Korean.  But even there the posts have been infrequent...

I think this blog needs a redesign and some fresh ideas, so I am going to work on that...soon.

You can probably expect some random posts about normal things, food and not so normal things...  like choking and spitting water over a colleague in the company canteen (Yes, this really happened to me on Friday).

As this is titled update, i guess I should update you about myself... Still working for the Korean software company, now in pre-sales and marketing, still enjoying life here, and I am starting guitar lessons on Monday evening...

Maybe I can write about that... I have a feeling that it will take some time as I have zero musical ability and talent... the teacher has his work cut out...

I have decided to learn Chinese!!!

I have decided that Korean is just too hard to learn, so I am giving up and I am going to start to learn Chinese instead. I realize that it won't be quite as useful , while I am working in a Korean company... but hey... at least it is another string in my not so useful bow...

I have started already

我开玩笑

it is so easy to learn... I reckon I will be fluent by the end of the year, then I can start on the various chinese dialects...

해피 화이트 데이!

Today is white day, I hate white day it is a commercial, bastardisation of the calendar and not only do I have to figure out something to buy my wife - who doesn't like chocolate or sweets - but this year I have the added burden of getting something for the girls in the office... and as white day is exactly 1 month after valentines day (Girls buy chocolate for boys) I have to give gifts back an to make matters worse there are 14 females in my office (Yeah like thats a bad thing!) So a small box of chocaltes is about 4,000\ times that by 14 and... well its 56,000\ more than I want to spend!

So after several days pondering this problem I found the solution 1 pack containing 4 bars of chocolate 4,000\ x 4 = 16,000\ + (and this is why I love Korea) plastic presentation bags with gold ties (15) 1,000\ cute cat shaped post-it notes (loads) 1,000\ + 30 mins to write a message on the post-it notes stick them on the chocolate bars and put them in the bags and tie them up... and job done! - 18,000\ and 14 girls get a personal gift from me for white day... - You may think I am tight but the way I look at it - I just saved my self 48,000\

HAPPY DAYS!

The message I wrote on the notes was - 해피 화이트 데이 ~ 로버트 x - and I think they look really good..

Just need to get the wife something.. I am thinking a plant - I had a look online for a florist and 80,000 ~ 210,000\ for a bunch of flowers put me right off that idea - (Ok - I admit I am tight!)

Amazing things #31 - Wall mounted CD Player

One thing that Apartment dwelling Koreans don't have a lot of, - is space... and one thing they can't make a lot of, - is noise, so big floor standing speakers and hi-fi systems are not as common as in other parts of the world... This nifty gadget gives you a clock, CD player /  mp3 player,  with micro SD card / usb support and speakers in a 9" round device you can hang on the wall, in a range of colors... Amazing!

Work Pressure and Sunday classes

Here is a post from my language learning blog, but as it is about my life in Korea rather than being just about Language learning, I thought I would post here too...

The original post is here: http://korean-learning.blogspot.com/2014/02/work-pressure-and-sunday-classes.html

Yesterday I had a new teacher for my Sunday Sogang Level 2A class.

Her Teaching Style is different, FAST!  We did the whole of chapter 6 in 1 hour 30 mins, to be honest I struggled a bit even some of the vocabulary, I wasn't sure of but I think I managed ok - the other student in the class (yeah - there is only 2 of us!) is more advanced than me so probably easier for him!

When going through the grammar sections where you have to complete a sentence, the pace was so fast that she was practically giving the answer while I was still working out the grammar form, then we ran through the page reading the answers and she corrected pronunciation, etc.  If I keep up the self study using these sections of the book, then maybe it will be ok. But, for me Sogang class was about studying in a class environment and just doing a reading / listening as homework - this gave me time to study the TOPIK, Business and writing types of study that I am currently attempting.  But the lesson is FREE and it is a great help, I really think I need to attend a Hagwon class for study or get a private 1-2-1 teacher.  But it is something I can't afford at the moment, in terms of time or money.

Work pressure

Transferring to a new team at work, whose focus is not on language and translation it is sales and marketing for Overseas clients (English speakers). I attended my first meeting last week - it was in KOREAN and I  understood he morning sessions in varying degrees that I was quite pleased about - but by the afternoon I was lost...  In the evening was a welcome meal for some new employees and a farewell meal for a manager who is heading to south America to set up a new branch - the new colleagues and a couple of other younger employees speak English really well but I can't expect them to translate everything for me during the course of the day..
I bought a new book  Essential Korean for Business Use.
You can look at the first few pages >>Here<<
It seems an interesting book great for supplementary self study...

Amazing Things #30 Magic Spoon

Amazing Things #30 Magic spoon

When I first saw this, I thought it must be a mixing spoon or a measuring spoon - Spoons are pretty functional and the design seems to have passed the test of time and there is not much room for improvement.
It functions well but it is Just a spoon!
But what if a spoon was not for eating your cereal or mixing your Bi Bim Bap...  Then it has the potential to become...  MAGIC...  and therefore makes the list as Amazing thing #30.

I give you the Magic Spoon Massager:

and this is how it works... but why is it a spoon?

And of course we all know that in order to sell a product - we need some westerners to endorse it - I thought these two were particularly SCARY!!!

Amazing things #28 - Food waste bin

Amazing things #28 Food waste bin

Here is a poorly shot video of our new food waste recycling bin, you scan a card, it shouts out your address and opens up tells you what to do in Korean and amazingly English (my wife says I should feel honoured as I am the only English person in my Apartment complex)- you chuck in your food waste, it weighs it and then tells you how much it cost - I cut off that bit as I didn't realise it was still talking...

Well I think it is amazing...   640 won per 10 kg that's about 0.40p in real money!!!  And that truly is amazing, I mean how much do 3 of those machines cost?

Abandoned Babies May Soon Have Nowhere To Go In Korea...Again! Please read... and pass on

January 6, 2014

Frigid and cold doesn't quite embody this night. It is, after all, December, just one year ago. Christmas time…the music, the lights, Santa Claus. So much holiday cheer around Pohang, South Korea. But in the still of the night a child was born. This usually joyful occasion is not on this night as the baby was born to a young, unwed mother. An unwed mother that could not face the miserable life that would unfold if she kept her sweet infant boy. She hid her pregnancy from everyone, even though she lived under the same roof as her mother and father. Maybe she didn't really hide it but rather it was a problem that was ignored in the hopes of it going away.
And go away it did. Desperate and out of options, for being a single mother in this Confucian land means a life of exile and hardship, even in 2012. This mother wrapped her child in the warmest blanket she could find and sprinted down the street in search of a sanctuary for her little one. Not finding one she left her son in the wee hours of the morning in a darkened alley, the street so cold droplets of water froze on contact, and fled, praying for her son to survive the night.
Soon after his mother left a passerby heard his cries and called the police. Knowing that looking for his mother would be fruitless, they sent him to an orphanage a few kilometers from the alley where he was found. He still lives there where he will likely stay until the age of 20 when he will, in all probability, join the Korean military for at least two years of service.
This baby is not just a statistic to me. I see him each time I volunteer at the orphanage, teaching English to his “brothers” and “sisters.” He is too young to partake in the activities but runs around the room, playing hide and seek with my husband and me, shrieking with delight each time we catch him. When he falls and gets a boo-boo he cries for his “Umah!” a lovely woman that devotes her life to orphans.
This story happens all around this country, a proud and conservative nation that masks this dark side of its underbelly. Single mothers are virtually non-existent here although unplanned pregnancies happen often. Abortion is illegal despite still being performed regularly, and sending a daughter away in shame to give birth and put her child up for adoption is neither rare nor socially unacceptable.
But through this pain and suffering a box was born. A Baby Box to be precise. A place where mothers could drop off their newborns anonymously, knowing the children would be safe and looked after for the foreseeable future. There is but one of these precious wooden boxes in the entire country, in Seoul, the most forward thinking of the Korean communities. When the box was opened at Jusarang Church eighteen newborns were left in the first twenty days. In 2012 alone, 235 babies were dropped off by their ill-equipped parents in the hopes of a better life. That’s almost five babies a week.

The mother that left her baby in an alley here in Pohang, didn’t have a place like the Baby Box to drop her son.  And would quite possibly have used it had it been available and accessible to her. However, over the last few years the government, due to public pressure, has been trying to shut down this humanitarian endeavor. The government believes the box encourages parents to have sex out of wedlock and then abandon their babies, a logic that makes about as much sense as teaching abstinence only sex education. They believe closing the box will inspire the sad and hopeless mothers to raise their children where they will most likely live in poverty after being disowned by their families. In addition, the government offers very little support to unwed mothers, a paltry 70,000 won (about $68) a month in support.
But, instead of simple forcing the Baby Box to be shut down the government is, instead, passive aggressively leaving the church no other option BUT to close the box. Here is a letter, which was posted on the Mission to Promote Adoption in Korea blog from Ms. Young Ran Jeong from the Jusarang Community Church, which houses the Baby Box:
This morning we received a call from the person in charge of the Baby Box at the Kwanak-Ku office.  I was told that the city of Seoul and the Seoul Metropolitan Children’s Welfare Center (서울시아동복지센터) and the Seoul City Children’s Hospital (서울시립어린이병원) had a discussion and they have decided they will no longer accept the babies abandoned through the Baby Box.
They have concluded that other than in emergency situations, they cannot accept additional babies as there is no spaces available in the institutions in the Seoul areas.  They told the Jusarang Church (where the Baby Box is) that it would be up to them to take care of the abandoned babies from now on.  The city was scheduled to come on Thursday to pick up the children, but they will not do that now.  They also stated that the best solution is for them to move to another area region other than Seoul.  The other regions have enough rooms to accommodate the children, so it would be good for the Baby Box to move there.
I asked whether it would be possible for the city of Seoul to contact the regional areas and arrange to have the children be transported to those regions.  But their excuse was that this would not be possible without changing the administrative related laws.
I also asked the city employee to help the Jusarang to host a children’s center, but was told that if the condition was ideal for Jusarang this would be no problem (stipulation that Jusarang does not qualify under the current facility regulation as they are not legally approved to take care of children as the facility is too small).
They were clearly aware of our limitations, and I could not believe the city was telling me these things. The room at our facility for the newborn babies barely can hold seven babies…and what are we suppose to do for all the children that continue to come to our care…and we can’t even help with the birth registration matters.
I think the bottom line message from Seoul is that they want us to close the Baby Box.  Because there have been lots of pressures in the past to close the Baby Box, now the government is using this devious scheme to shut us down.   Why can’t they understand that closing the Baby Box is not the solution?
Outside the weather is very cold, and how can they think in this way when just a few days ago there was another news article where a baby was discovered abandoned somewhere and the baby was in a critical condition!!!!
We are at a loss as to what to do as they didn’t even give us how much time we have, but they just dropped the news on us.   We can only pray.
I ask for your prayers that this sticky situation will be resolved soon.
The central government of Korea also does virtually nothing financially or otherwise to care for the orphans and instead leaves it to private nurseries to bear the burden of raising the children unlucky enough to be passed up for adoption. Premarital sex is greatly ignored as is sex education. This is a country raised by Confucius and going outside the norm to address issues such as unwanted pregnancies or single mothers is an extremely touchy subject.
Two other baby boys were born. They were left in the care of others for the first months of their lives. They weren't abandoned on the side of the road but were born in a place where unwed mothers could go to find support during their pregnancies and given the peace to make the best decision for their unborn children. There is very little anyone knows about either one of their biological mother’s and father’s other than they chose to give their sons the best life possible. The boys were able to make it through the first months of their lives by the kindness and care of others and because their mothers had a place to leave them besides an alleyway or a dumpster. These boys turned out to be two of the most important people in my life. Two boys who grew up to be men the world can be proud of. The two boys are my brothers. Save the Baby Box. Save Babies.
